Thanks, Again, H2M!!!
Organized in 1933 and founded on engineering excellence, hard work and integrity,It wasn't very long ago that we thanked H2M, but they do so much for us that we feel compelled to do it again! H2M has been with us since 1995. When asked why they have stuck with Leadership over so many years, they tell us it's because of how much they get out of it; that's its a deeply meaningful experience for the individuals they share with us, and valuable skills development for their team. Indeed, in addition to their strong financial support, we have counted the people they send through our program as incredible assets. For this, and everything they do for the Town of Huntington and beyond -- THANKS!!!

WEDNESDAY, FEB 16th at 5:30PM Join Leadership Huntington at Mac's Steakhouse for the Class of 2012 Recruitment Kickoff!!! The Recruitment Kickoff is one of our most important Leadership socials. We're pleased to announce that interest in the Flagship Program has never seemed higher. In talking to potential candidates, it's become apparent that recruitment has been going on without us. Profile in Leadership: Yvette Stone, Class of '97
Yvette Stone is a long time resident of the Lowndes Avenue community of Huntington Station. She is deeply committed to helping her community any way she can. As a nurse at Cold Spring Hills Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Yvette was sidelined and needed surgery early this year after being hurt by a patient. While she looks forward to being able to run with her granddaughter again soon, as a Local 1199 Delegate she is keeping busy helping her coworkers from home.
Yvette also runs the Business Boutique/Back to School Supplies in memory of her son Alwyn Patrick Stone Jr., at St. John's Church. This organization is dedicated to providing business attire to help prepare people reentering the workforce. They are the only not for profit that dresses men on LI. In addition, Yvette is a Trustee of the Bethel AME Church in Huntington, where she is a member of the Building Fund and the Choir, and serves as a Pastor Aide and a Health Commission Chairperson. There, she started a church program that annually honors senior citizens. She is also the Health Committee Chairperson of the Huntington Branch of the NAACP. As a member of the Town committee dedicated to addressing issues in Huntington Station, Yvette was also part of the committee that worked on the Unity in the Community parade.
Yvette has received significant recognition for her community work. In 2010 she received the Ruby Award through Huntington's Chapter of Soportimist International. This is their Founder's Award. In the past she was honored with their Women's Award and the Business of the Year. In 2009, she received the Martin Luther King Jr. Women's Service Award through the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County, and the Volunteer of the Year Award through the Huntington Times Newspaper. Yvette credits much to Dolores Thompson of the Huntington Station Enrichment Center, whom she has nominated as a Local Hero to the Bank of America Neighborhood Excellence Initiative. She is passionate about Dee's efforts to strengthen the youth of her community, and does whatever she can to support her.

Profile in Leadership: Ed Perez, Class of '03
Ed does many things, but he is particularly proud of a nonprofit community organization called the "Friends of Huntington Station Latin Quarter," which is celebrating one year of providing services to the under privileged, uninformed, and the unrepresented population of Huntington Station.
The group seeks to serve as a central hub for its community, providing an umbrella of hope, a vision of pride, and a map to tackle tough community issues. They do this by combining available services with local initiatives that will help uplift the diverse population through social conditioning, developing the desire to educate and to be educated. Key stigmas they seek to tackle include:
- Drug Abuse Awareness
- The Undocumented
- Crimes & Violence
- At-Risk Youth
They are also interested in recognizing the needs of:
- The Aging Population
- Victims of Violence & Domestic Violence
- Economic Development
- Healthcare Awareness
- Beautification & Environmental Awareness
The mission of HSQL is motivated by key members of the community, many of whom have been serving for decades. They seek to be self sufficient, and to instill the understanding that it is UP TO US to make Huntington Station an appealing community that residents are proud to protect and eager to improve.

Profile in Leadership: Matt Spirn, Class of 2010 Most times, we profile grads engaged in critical work aimed at bettering their town, their way. Sometimes, however, we just find folks entertaining. Matt Spirn is one such novelty. Having worked hard all year running the Tasting Room in lovely downtown Northport, participating in Leadership Huntington's Class of 2010, and helping numerous local causes within the Town, Matt decided to take a break from a weary northeastern winter to go...dogsledding in northern Minnesota.
"It seemed like a good idea in July," said an ever so slightly apprehensive Matt, a few days before leaving in mid-January for a six day excursion with four tourists, two guides, thirty-two dogs and one childhood friend. What was his report upon return?
"It was by far the most difficult, grueling, uncomfortable, yet amazing adventure of my life!" says Matt, "I set the "adversity bar" very high for the rest of my life."
...Sounds like just the training he'll need to navigate the adventures in community trusteeship that await. We love you, Matt!
In addition to being a great supporter of our organization, Leadership grads get a 10% discount at the Northport Tasting Room. Not only will he serve as a guide to his great wines, Matt keeps take-out menus under the bar, and will get any cuisine from the village delivered right to you! Now that's service!!!

Message of the Huntington Community Council: You've Got a Friend
Budgets are in the disaster zone, government subsidies are on the Endangered Species list, private funds are sorely stretched and new sources are nowhere to be found. It's a tough time for anyone trying to make a difference and downright frightening for those among us dedicated to keeping the vulnerable from falling through the cracks, er, chasms. Fortunately, despite headlines and vocal minorities that too often leave us very frustrated, Huntington is a strong community that is committed to working together.
Evidence of this can be easily found in the Huntington Community Council. This initiative of Leadership Huntington and the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce is a forum for local not-for-profit organizations who meet approximately five times per year to join together in mutual education, opportunity, cooperation, collaboration and celebration specifically dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all.
We are most grateful for Peggy Boyd of the Family Service League and for Linda Mitchell of the Huntington Chamber for taking time out of their incredibly hectic schedules to coordinate a recent Council meeting that -- what with all the snow -- we started to fear might never happen! Peggy's calm assessment of our challenges, as well as how we can work together in sharing opportunities, offering support, and finding creative ways to work together came through as a guiding light. While she asks for no accolades, her effort to bring us together strongly underlines the value she brings to our community.
We at Leadership offer our heartfelt support to the Council, and to anyone working in service to our community. Let us know of your needs, issues and events, as well as the opportunities you have to share. We'll do what we can, here and elsewhere, to help Huntington keep it together in the hard times and to flourish in the good. Thanks.

Huntington League of Women Voters Presents: "Gasland," a film by Josh Fox. February 17th, 7:00pm at the Cinema Arts Centre
Don't miss this documentary about "Hydraulic Fracturing and it's Dangers." Adrienne Esposito of Citizens Campaign for the Environment and a member of Governor Cuomo's Transition Team will be speaking. A reception will follow. Admission for members is $10, non-members $15.
In the race to figure out how we're going to keep the lights on, some ideas seem better than others. Staying educated is paramount. This is a great opportunity to meet your neighborns, to consider this pressing issue and to learn why it's important to us on Long Island.
On a side note, Leadership offers thanks to the Huntington LWV for inviting us in to present to their esteemed organization. The League works to educate and involve its community in matters pertaining to voting, local legislation and issues that come to their attention. We learned a lot, ourselves, and look forward to working together for many years to come.
